The Design Doctrine ReForm
There are times when design doctrines change. These doctrines are bodies of teachings or instructions, taught principles or positions, connected to a belief system such as design in our consumer society. As schools of thought forming the foundation on how we perceive our position and function in society. They are codes of behavior to make society resemble a well functioning machine.
Today we can trace a change in modus operandi from RO to R/W. From Read Only to Read/Write doctrines. From standardized, interpassive consumption of mass produced goods to engaged participation on micropolitical scale as co-designers, co-authors, and prosumers. From a material, industrial, and machine based metaphor for society to a fluid, networked, and method based.
In this change we have to find an own voice. Create meanings from own compositions. Using the tensions between the words sprung from a ready-formatized system such as language. To use the possibility to talk back, to be the media, to create ones own message. It might not be a specifically new or unique image or word, but it can still make an impression and maybe even assemble something so far unseen! And it is yours.
Write what you want, invent a symbol, change it again. Change the wire, add whatever, trash it out. The jewelry is not an item, it is an idea. A space of action where you find your own voice or dream up your own image.
It they give you lined paper, write on the diagonal. It is not about how many color crayons you have in your box, it is about what you do with them. Now color outside the lines. Read/Write!
